Violence Against Women Still a Serious Problem in Somalia

A recent visit by the NGO Happier Mothers (HAMOT) to Garowe IDPs revealed the ongoing problem of violence against women in Somalia. During the visit, HAMOT staff met a woman who had broken her hand. The woman told them that she had been beaten by her husband, and that she was afraid to come forward for help because she feared retaliation.

This case is just one example of the many women who suffer from violence in Somalia. According to a 2019 report by the United Nations, 44% of women in Somalia have experienced physical or sexual violence. This violence can have devastating consequences for women’s physical and mental health, as well as their economic and social well-being.

HAMOT is committed to ending violence against women in Somalia. They provide a variety of services to survivors of violence, including counseling, legal support, and economic assistance. HAMOT also works to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women, and to challenge the cultural norms that perpetuate it.

“We cannot tolerate violence against women,” said HAMOT Executive Director Halima Abdulahi. “It is a violation of human rights, and it has a devastating impact on women’s lives. We will continue to work to end violence against women in Somalia, and we call on all Somalis to join us in this fight.”

HAMOT’s work is essential, but it is also challenging. Many women are afraid to come forward for help, and those who do often face retaliation from their abuser. HAMOT needs the support of the Somali community to continue their work and to make a difference in the lives of women in Somalia.

If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, please reach out for help. There are many resources available, including HAMOT. You are not alone.
